Travis was born on the banks of the Ohio River and the border of West Virginia. Shortly after birth, his ball started rolling, and in the twenty years to follow he would amass a list of addresses totaling over forty across 7 states. After moving throughout Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Florida, a new passion was born for whitewater during his final semester of Ecotourism and Adventure Travel at Hocking College.
Inspired to pursue whitewater, Travis signed up for a guide school offered by Nantahala Outdoor Center. Within days of completion he was offered a job with Carolina Outfitters on the Nantahala river. After training trips on the famed Ocoee river and the finale of his “rookie” season Travis made up his mind to commit further to the river and the industry and ventured to Colorado in search of more challenging whitewater opportunities.
Deciding on Clear Creek for it’s variety of river sections and demanding technicality, Travis hunted down employment and found a home with Arkansas Valley Adventures (AVA). During the next 4 seasons he would take over 600 commercial river trips on class II-V whitewater, guide over 4,500 river miles, paddle 25+ sections on over a dozen Colorado rivers and learn that the river is his forever home.
In addition to guiding rafts, Travis also took up whitewater kayaking, which has become his driving force in whitewater explorations. To round out his skills he has taken Swiftwater rescue courses, and holds a Wilderness First Responder certification.
In the event you can find Travis off the river, he would be happy to get right back on it with you. If boating isn’t your thing, he’ll also happily snowboard, hike, backpack, rock climb, or work on improving his horrendous fly fishing technique.
