Pushing off the land and navigating the continuous flow of a river in a kayak presents opportunities to challenge and reward more than any other outdoor adventure sport. Similarily, practicing yoga allows individuals to connect deeper to their bodies through breath, movement, and awareness.
We are excited to offer a Kayak + Yoga Immersion for beginner students Sept. 17-18 here at Wet Planet Whitewater.
Teaching the fundamentals of whitewater kayaking through the eyes of a yogi allows instructor Susan Hollingsworth to help students use whole body awareness and refined mental clarity in a sport that can be intimidating and scary at first. Using sensitivity, non-attachment, skilled alignment, enthusiasm, and joy she helps student move with greater ease, focus on the present moment and -most of all- enjoy the beauty of the Columbia River Gorge’s most spectacular rivers.
Wanna Camcam, owner and instructor at North Portland Yoga, joins the course to prepare students for two days of water, laughter, and awakening through pre and post-trip yoga sessions.
Having found whitewater kayaking through a Wet Planet kayak course earlier this summer, Wanna’s yoga practice of 12 years has transformed. She has studied with senior yoga teachers such as Anusara’s John Friend, Tony Guiliano, and Kenny Graham, but finds the river to be one of the most influencial teachers in her life so far. Wanna will teach an outdoor morning and evening yoga class to support the beginner mind, newly discovered muscles, and the entire kayaking experience.
Yoga + Kayak Immersion Schedule
Saturday, Sept. 17
8AM – 5PM
Outdoor Morning Yoga Practice with Wanna
We work with our foundation, breath, calm, trust, and the openness to learn something new. We’ll work to open the back and side body, shoulders, hips, and heart.
Beginner Kayak Progression with Susan
We begin to connect our body movements to our new whitewater vessels through simple techniques, first practiced in the comfort of a pool. After lunch we’ll hit one of the many Columbia River Gorge’s spectacular lakes for an afternoon of paddling.
Afternoon Yoga Practice
We work on grounding oneself after a day on the water. We’ll assist in opening the body through forward bends and twists, forearms, shoulders, wrists.
Sunday, Sept 18th
8AM – 6PM
Riverside Morning Yoga Practice
We find sensitivity through our breath and body to align with the river, while keeping balanced through our center. Loosen ourselves up in the neck, shoulders, torso, waist, lower back and hips.
Kayak together on the Klickitat River
We take our new skills to this Pacific Northwest classic stretch of river. The kayak course will focus on running the Klickitat’s class II rapids and enjoying the flow of the river beneath our kayaks.
Evening Restorative and Therapeutic Yoga Session
After all our hard work, we relax, restore, and receive. Restorative postures are supported and comfortable, and held for longer periods while the body naturally opens and releases tension.
Includes all kayaking gear and instruction, all yoga classes, and lunch both days.
