Winter Pool Session last Saturday
Every Saturday at 10am, the Hood River Pool closes off an area of the pool to allow kayakers to get in the water and play. This past Saturday, the Wet Planet crew headed across the Columbia for a Saturday pool session. Heather worked with students during a regularly scheduled Wet Planet kayak pool session, while a couple other Wet Planet staff took advantage of the warm water to just have fun in our boats. The group was of all skill levels. Todd practiced bow stalls and other playboating moves, while I practiced my roll to make sure it’ll be solid for the summer season. Heather did a great job helping two ladies who were working to conquer the kayak roll. All in all it was a pretty fun morning in Hood River. To add to the entertainment, Todd even brought his new favorite toy from Wet Planet: a flip camera with waterproof casing!! After experimenting briefly, we determined that the case is waterproof, but it does not float. I wish someone had taken a picture of our faces while we stood in the water staring at the video camera sitting on the bottom of the pool. We did have a few laughs taking turns shooting video of each other working on our rolls. It’s amazing what you can learn by watching video of of what you’re body is doing while you’re upside down in the kayak. A few of the clips have gone up on our Facebook page, and more should be up shortly, check them out.
If you want to join us for any of our scheduled pool sessions at the Hood River pool, we’ll be offering sessions on March 20th and April 24th. You can also check out our pool session page for more information by clicking here. What’s next for Wet Planet winter activities? Our One-day rescue clinic for paddlers and our classic Pacific Northwest creeking clinic on March 6th and 7th don’t let the cool weather stop you, get in your kayak and come play!
