We all know that men and women are different. They have evolved differently because they have had to. Men hunted, women gathered. Men protected, women nurtured. As a result, their bodies and brains evolved in completely different ways.
Women are different, hence women learn differently.
So, the question remains: Is whitewater kayaking a better sport for men or for women?
The answer is both! Success lies in approaching the sport using a learning style that works for us.
Why is it such a surprise and an accomplishment when women run the same whitewater as the men?
So often we hear about how women take ‘women-specific’ courses because they are scared, timid, weak, have emotional issues, etc. We don’t offer these gender specific courses because you need something ‘easier’ and ‘safer’ than the boys. We offer these gender specific courses because you need a different approach to learning the same skills.
“I’m not out there to hold your hand,” says lead instructor Heather Herbeck. “I know you can be just as ‘hard-core’ as anyone else if that’s your goal. If not, I’m here to teach you the skills to enjoy the same whitewater as the next person and just have fun.”
Here at Wet Planet, the ladies get together once a month for a paddling series to learn, laugh and empower one another. This paddle series will emphasize a different technique or focus on a particular topic during each session:
July – Great for Beginner/Intermediate, this month we’ll focus on the basics of precision paddling.
August – Another day for both Beginner and Intermediate paddlers, we call this month’s clinic “The Kayaking Mindset.”
September – 5-day Rogue River trip including yoga, fitness, mental training exercises, costumes and more! A trip to remember for a lifetime and it’s only for the ladies.
Our women’s whitewater kayaking series is dedicated to all the ladies out there that want to learn and improve their kayaking skills and increase their enjoyment on the water. We learn in a non-competitive, comfortable environment, which then fosters confident paddlers.
“Every woman wants to feel successful,” says Heather. “This environment brings women together to share, support, challenge and laugh! Best of all, we leave our egos at the put-in! Come join us to find out how inspirational these courses can be.”
