We are a whitewater rafting company, so it makes sense that rafting and kayaking take up a lot of our time and attention. It’s the adventure. It’s the splashes. But, whoa – have you seen those shirts?
This year our on-staff graphic designer, Eliza, has been sketching up and producing some of our favorite designs yet. With many styles selling out and being reordered, on what seems like a daily basis, we thought it was time we checked-in with Eliza to hear what her take on the shirts, hats and other apparel is.
Where to start? Eliza came on board with a degree and background in fine arts and print making with some fresh ideas for the Wet Planet style. But, she didn’t want to squash what we had. “It’s important to pay respect and mesh with the old designs when coming into a new environment. They are a part of the style and theme for Wet Planet, you can’t just erase them. My goal was to blend my style with Wet Planet’s to make a retail line that brings freshness into the old designs.”
What is your style?
“I think it would be a mix of handmade, simple and playful. People find value in designs that they can see a person’s hand in and I wanted to bring that into the mix. It’s interesting having a fine arts background versus a design background because I feel that it gives me an added level of creativity to work with.”
Eliza says one of the designs she was really excited to work with was the existing waterfall design. “While keeping the same design base for the waterfall I began to brainstorm more ideas and ways to incorporate other themes from the various designs. The first thought was a totem pole and how there are different levels of the whole, which can be seen in the stacking of the raft and kayak throughout the design. I also updated the water and waves to reflect the new style of our logo while incorporating my own hand drawn style.”
It’s always valuable when you can incorporate a company’s logo and values into a design, which we did in the Block Print Series. The first, fish scales, represent the upstream migration of wild Salmon and Trout on the White Salmon after the removal of the Condit Dam in 2011 – a project Wet Planet was closely involved in. The second shows what we do – we kayak, we raft, we play on the river. And the third is an abstract version of the logo. It encompasses what we stand for, what we do and who we are – all in one design.
We have the unique opportunity this year to work with many different manufacturers. Wet Planet and Ouray have worked together for many years – using their set designs to produce some of our staple t-shirts, tanks and sweatshirts on their stock. This year, Eliza and Wet Planet had the unique opportunity to use some of their high-quality merchandise, but with Eliza’s designs.
Keeping with the tradition of utilize local flavors and talent, Wet Planet continues to work with Columbia Graphics out of Hood River which bring customization to a whole new level. With the freedom to design our own graphics and choose merchandise from a variety of retailers, Columbia Graphics gives us the tools and resources to create and customize our apparel to fit our company.
A staff and guest favorite, Recaps has been a dream to work with. Also based out of Hood River, Recaps are hand made hats that are one-of-a-kind – literally! Each hat is created by hand with no hat being exactly like another with design and material elements that are totally unique. Using the Quadrant design and a hand-carved stamp, these hats have been flying off the shelves.
Not sure what you want? Here are some the favorites of the Wet Planet Base Team.
Jordan – Green Sasquatch T-Shirt. It’s just plain funny.
Sophia – The Purple Circle T. The material is so soft and feels like home with the mountain based on the silhouette of Mt. Adams.
Eliza – Anything with the circle logo. It turned out so great and its gender neutral, so anyone can pull it off.
Dani – The Blue Women’s Tank. The waterfall design is an eye-catcher and it’s so soft – it’s the go-to tank.
Omar – Kicking it old school with the Snoopy design from a few years back. For this year? The classic black t-shirt and circle logo.
Need a new shirt? Or want a souvenir of your rafting trip that will have people talking? Or maybe you just want to grab a latte and biscotti while relax in the cafe? Come see Eliza and the entire Wet Planet Base Team any day of the week at Wet Planet.
