The Columbia River Gorge community is an internationally renowned hub for outdoor recreation. Ask most residents what brought them here, and you’ll find that mountain biking, hiking, skiing, wind surfing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and simply its stunning natural and scenic beauty, are among the most common answers. A more intriguing question though, what keeps people here? There are many places that you can participate in multiple sports in one day or look in awe as you explore the natural scenery, where you can revel in sunrises and sunsets on the regular, enjoy a good local beer or shop in a quaint downtown. The Gorge has something unique though…it maintains an outstanding sense of community, supported by the wonderful Gorge Owned organization.
That gentleman at the brewery explaining what makes PNW IPAs so special is the same one who talked you through kayaking a hard rapid on the White Salmon River earlier that week, and the same one who you saw at a community fundraiser after work yesterday. He donates kegs to every local event and makes sure your kids get across the street safely. He gave the up-and-coming band a venue to play their first show, and provides a place for locals and tourists to come together at the end of a day to trade stories. He takes pride in the place that he lives and the people in it. And he’s not the only one.
You see this everywhere in the Gorge. People who still believe in the meaning of being a neighbor, who rejoice in each others successes, who look for ways to support one another.
Gorge Owned (GO!) and Chinook Book are the epitome of what it looks like for organizations to take pride and ownership in building and sustaining strong communities. Recently, GO! has partnered with Chinook Book, making it easier than ever to connect to local businesses. Chinook Book chooses companies that take care of the environment and give back to the community to partner with. They work with them to create shop local initiatives, helping to grow and strengthen those regions. In their new collaboration, GO! and Chinook Book are bringing the Chinook Book app to the Gorge. We’ll see this driving more business to local companies, in turn growing our economy right here at home.
In line with our sustainability philosophy, of course Wet Planet has to be part of this cool new GO! initiative, launched in November 2016. The Wet Planet ‘coupon’ includes specials on whitewater rafting trips on the White Salmon River for this coming season.
Join us in supporting the local community by purchasing your own Chinook Book subscription, and book your discounted 2017 White Salmon white water rafting trip by using the Chinook App! Visit GO! Local for a list of the Gorge’s participating businesses – shops, restaurants, hotels, wineries, breweries, contractors, business services, and nonprofits – and learn how to access Chinook Book for local deals.
PS – this if you live in the Seattle and Portland areas, and use the Chinook Book (app), you can now also use it in the Gorge!
