Halloween is just around the bend, and if you’re anything like us, you’re probably looking for a costume that screams, “I’d rather be paddling!” Don’t worry, we’ve got your back (and your PFD). Whether you’re hitting the rapids, a Halloween party, or the bars, we’ve rounded up some fun, slightly ridiculous, and totally river-worthy costume ideas.

Please forgive us, we asked AI for a little visual inspiration for these costume ideas. We have to admit, the results are all over the place, some are impressive and some are so bad they have their own spooky flare. AI is fun, but clearly, still has a long way to go! These are new and unique ideas, so we don’t have any pictures to use. But we would love to see your pictures should you decide to put together one of these ideas. Tag us on social @wetplanet

1. The River God/Goddess

Who says you can’t rule the river *and* the party? Drape yourself in flowing blue and green fabrics, add some plastic fish and river stones, and top it off with a crown of cattails and reeds. Bonus points if you carry a paddle like it’s a royal scepter.

2. The Whitewater Warrior

Halloween costume: Whitewater Warrior

Dust off your helmet, throw on your PFD and suit up like you’re about to conquer the biggest rapid on the river. Paint on some white and blue face paint to mimic splashing water, and maybe add a few fake fish getting “caught” in your gear. Get creative and fashion some “whitewater” off the back of your PFD, and maybe even an old paddle.

3. The Laid-Back River Guide

We all know that one guide who’s just a bit too chill. Channel your inner laid-back legend with a sun-faded hat, short shorts, and a Hawaiian shirt that’s seen better days. Don’t forget the ever-present Nalgene bottle (which may or may not be filled with something stronger than water). Carry around a crumpled map, and if anyone asks for directions, just shrug and say, “Yeah, we’re kinda here, but like… who really knows?”

4. The Playful River Otter

If you’re more about floating than paddling, slip into a brown onesie, add a homemade tail, and draw on some whiskers. You might not be the fastest one on the water, but you’ll definitely be the cutest. Extra points if you casually munch on a snack like it’s the best thing you’ve ever tasted—because, let’s face it, otters know how to enjoy the little things.

5. The DIY Kayak Couple

hahaha, this is how AI thinks a “river rat” looks

Got a partner who’s willing to paddle the extra mile with you? Go as a tandem kayak team! Break out the cardboard and paint to craft some makeshift kayaks, complete with suspenders to wear them. Add a couple of pool noodles as paddles, and you’ve got yourselves the ultimate DIY costume.

6. The Sneaky Strainer

This one’s for the inside joke crowd. Dress up in brown and green with branches and leaves sticking out every which way. Carry a sign that says, “Warning: Strainer Ahead!” and be prepared to “trap” people as they try to pass you. It’s like playing tag, but with more river hazards.

7. The Class V Rapid

River rapid costume

Want to make a big splash (literally and figuratively)? Go as your favorite rapid! Dress in blue with white cotton or fabric to mimic churning waves, and label yourself with your rapid’s name. Whether you’re “Corkscrew” or “Triple Drop” you’ll be sure to make an impression. Extra credit if you attach a toy kayak or raft to your outfit and let it “navigate” down your rapid all night long. Just be prepared for the inevitable, “How hard are you to run?” jokes.

Paddle Your Way to the Best Halloween Yet!
