Born and bred in Boulder, Colorado, Devin grew up in the mountains and took his first kayaking course at age 14. Unfortunately, with no paddling community, transportation or kayak, he wasn’t able to fully dive into the sport until he began attending Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.
As a freshman at Whitman, Devin went to his first pool session and immediately signed up for the Whitewater Club. Only 4 days later, he drove to Hood River for the first time and never looked back. Most recently, Devin has worked as a math and science teacher and kayak coach at World Class Academy. He has guided and instructed on rivers in Utah, Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, and Chile and has also paddled in South America, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Maryland, West Virginia, and New York.
Devin’s favorite memory from guiding is taking his family down the “Bridge to Bridge” section on the Rio Futaleufu. Though he will never forget the look on his mother’s face after the first two rapids and thinking to himself that the trip was a terrible idea, Devin loved getting to share his passion with his family. This reflects the joy he finds in sharing his enthusiasm and love for the river with everyone who sets foot in his raft or his kayak classroom. When not on the river, Devin is found trying to understand why he’s not on the river, playing cribbage, reading, or pretending he’s a photographer.
