Thomas discovered rafting the summer after graduating high school, when his family took a five-day trip down the Yampa River in Colorado and Utah. After returning home to the east coast, he trained and guided for two years on the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers before moving to Colorado to guide on the Arkansas River. On the Arkansas Thomas started trip leading and learned to kayak, developing his skill set over several consecutive years of high water. He also has a certification as a Wilderness First Responder. After four years in Colorado, he decided to continue his journey west to join the Wet Planet team.
When he is not guiding, Thomas’ favorite thing to do is still running whitewater, whether on a quick run after work or a multi-day river trip. Boating has brought him across the country, chasing whitewater from West Virginia to California. He even managed to squeeze a week of kayaking into a beach vacation to Ecuador last fall. Off the river he enjoys camping, writing, and spending time with friends. In the winters Thomas works as a snowmobile guide in Colorado, where he spends most of his days off skiing, dog sledding, or thinking about the river.
