David Higgins (we all know him as Higgins) discovered whitewater kayaking when he began his studies in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ireland, Galway. It quickly became his passion. Eager to give back to the sport, Higgins coached with his university club, and realized that he really enjoyed it. By the time he graduated, he had qualified as a Level 3 River Instructor, and worked for multiple outdoor centers and kayak clubs across the west of Ireland.
Freestyle roots gave Higgins his first taste of whitewater and equipped him with the skills to enjoy the rivers that Ireland has to offer. It took a while, but he finally took his kayak abroad in 2014, heading for the European Alps. Having been bit by the travel bug, Higgins has since returned to the Alps for additional trips, as well as making paddling journeys to Mexico, Vancouver, and Scotland. While whitewater kayaking remains his passion, Higgins also enjoys a bit of sea kayaking, downriver racing, and an occasional game of kayak polo.
When not kayaking, Higgins enjoys anticipating his next kayaking adventure by keeping fit and eating well. He enjoys running, reading, hiking and, more recently, has taken an interest in yoga and long walks on the beach. He is super-excited to be a part of the Wet Planet team and eagerly awaits his next adventure alongside the rest of the crew.
